"The Sagrada Familia Basilica, Barcelona: Finite Element Simulation’s role in a 140-year journey"

Vortragsreihe "Tragwerke - Entwurf, Modellierung und Konstruktion"

Richard Sturt (Arup)

Zum Vortrag:

Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia Basilica is one of the world’s most iconic and charismatic buildings. Despite still being under construction, it already has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The design, by architect Antoni Gaudi, includes several slender towers up to 90m high that will make it the tallest Christian church in the world on its completion in 2026. Arup is part of the structural design team responsible for the six largest of these towers, which must be designed to modern standards including resistance to earthquakes while maintaining the unique appearance and using the stone materials intended by the architect.

This presentation will touch on the long and eventful history of the building’s design and construction and will describe the novel engineering solutions employed for the towers together with the role of nonlinear finite element analysis in their design. The analysis techniques used for this unique building will be set in the context of a wide range of seismic engineering challenges, which include assessment of existing historic structures as well as design of new structures.

Zur Person:

Richard Sturt works for the international engineering consultancy firm Arup, where he is an Arup Fellow. Specialising in the application of laws-of-physics based numerical simulation techniques to problems in the arena of building and civil engineering, he has worked with the nonlinear finite element software LS-DYNA for over 30 years and has developed some of the software features that are now in daily use in the analysis of the earthquake-resistance of buildings and other construction-related issues.
